Earth Quakes and Its Aftereffects
An earthquake occurs when there is a movement or dislocation of a variety of ground materials beneath the outer layer of earth or within its crust. Different chemical reactions cause creating of a force that pushes on a pile of rocks. It damages the friction between rocks, which prohibits them to slip and holds them together. This may become a reason of earthquakes. They are different in intensity and magnitude, some of them may be slight, while other may be violent and destructive that can bring enormous damage to human life, property and infrastructure. There might be various stresses beneath the earth’s front surface. Stresses usually are built up until the rocks crack within a “fault plane” (Hyndman, 2010). This may cause vibrations, are normally called seismic waves. These waves travel in all directions from the area of crack. In high magnitude earthquakes seismic waves can be detected over the entire surface. There are some other reasons as well, such as volcanoes, nuclear explosions etc.
Earthquakes not only destroy buildings and bring floods but they can cause an underwater earthquake, which is called tsunami, which can be more devastating and lethal. There are having been severe tsunami earthquakes in 2004, which was spreading over coasts of many countries and a recent example of Japan’s tsunami in 2011. which killed more than 16 thousand people according to the national police agency of Japan.
            To prevent life damages from earthquakes, it is important to do Drop and Cover. It means to fall on the floor and lay under something for safety. When earthquake is occurring, try to remain calm and take shelter under concrete and multilayer objects. If you someone is caught outside during earthquake, it is import to stay away from building and objects that may fall down. There might be aftershocks, so be ready and take necessary protections.
